This case study shows how Crowder Consulting helped Yorkshire Water modernise its modelling process across the AMP7 investment period. In 2008, Yorkshire Water implemented Crowder's[Netbase Water Management System](https://www.crowderconsult.com/blog/cloud-based-water-management-system-help) to support the reporting and management of network leakage and pressure. [Hydraulic model analysis](https://www.crowderconsult.com/hydraulic-modelling-of-water-networks) has been a particular area of focus. Here, improvements in data confidence have delivered significant gains in efficiency. ### **Early Gains from the HM Manager Trial** Crowder initialised the Netbase HM Manager application and developed new working practices using a trial model. Crowder partnered with Arup, one of the framework partners on Yorkshire Water's Consultancy Services Contract. Together, they delivered several models using HM Manager and the newly developed processes. The project covered the full modelling process. Key activities included: - Defining the model extents - Validating network assets and associated data - Constructing the hydraulic model - Conducting supply site visits - Developing and executing a field test plan - Performing the field test - Calibrating the model - Producing a comprehensive model report ### **Refining the AMP7 Modelling Strategy** Yorkshire Water recognised the success of the HM Manager initialisation and the new model build processes. As a result, they refined their modelling strategy for the AMP7 investment period (2020–25). The strategy set two clear rules. All new hydraulic models were to be constructed using HM Manager. Existing models not scheduled for renewal were to be migrated into HM Manager. Under Yorkshire Water's AMP7 Modelling Framework contract, Crowder Consulting was awarded 12 hydraulic models. This ensured all relevant infrastructure and operational areas were included. Key infrastructure assets were then identified for data gathering. These included service reservoirs, pumping stations, and control valves. A network schematic was drawn to map the network. It showed asset connectivity, the upstream network, areas within the model, and zonal boundaries. The schematic also enabled meter balances to be performed. These balances flagged anomalous and missing data, for which enabling works were raised. ## **Model Build** Models were constructed in HM Manager using validated network data. Trace and connectivity tools were used to assess data integrity and reveal anomalies. Any issues identified were then addressed. ### **Resolving Data Anomalies** The resolution steps included: - Drawing missing assets - Updating asset connectivity - Correcting asset flow directions - Completing pipe and property assignments - Generating elevation data - Adjusting internal pipe diameters and pipe roughness coefficients ### **Demand Analysis** An initial demand analysis was carried out and applied to an initial model. Discrepancies between observed network flow and derived consumption data were investigated. These were then resolved in consultation with the client. ## **Control Data Migration and Preliminary Calibration** Existing model control data were reviewed and migrated where applicable. Previous calibration assumptions were applied where appropriate. ### **Preliminary Calibration in InfoWorks WS Pro** The model was then exported from HM Manager into **InfoWorks WS Pro** to perform a limited calibration exercise. Permanently monitored data was compared against the modelled flow, pressure, and level results. This confirmed they were within acceptable tolerances. The initial model was then shared with Yorkshire Water for internal review and sign-off. ## **Field Test Planning and Deployment** ### **Planning and Approvals** A model field test plan was produced. It detailed the sites requiring monitoring in line with the client's specification, for example, a pressure logger density of 1 per 250 properties. Yorkshire Water reviewed and amended the plan. Further enabling works were then arranged to ensure sufficient monitoring coverage. ### **Equipment Preparation** Logistical planning followed. This stage included: - Completing Health & Safety documents - Issuing notifications - Obtaining permits - Preparing equipment - Producing field test documents ### **Field Deployment and Data Collection** Flow and pressure loggers were deployed at key locations. Supply site visits and intermediate checks were carried out where required. The monitoring period lasted seven days. Afterwards, data was retrieved, and pressure logger locations were surveyed for elevation data. ## **Model Calibration**  The model calibration phase involved several key activities. Each step is summarised below:  ![](https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXeHK5_v6zdR1SKSEJkVjCXnuFe7beVaD8xgXM-NC-tSMwFPscQhrX-sz-SAx93rl1zW0o4wvY_THsgp49J74uhntTXjApwj8i4IgHaQEK4T7170ArYsQnilo3dWyzDg7VVIb3mcXyt4Slkkt1CuKHM?key=dh7UrVvQ6O0VsyGiGxUXbA) - **Calibration day selection** – field test data was processed and reviewed, both qualitatively and quantitatively, to select a calibration day. - **Model fit assessment** – comparative profiles were generated to assess model fit. - **Falling head analysis** – anomalous data was addressed by applying offsets, correcting elevations, or excluding the data. - **Flow balance analysis** – anomalous data was either corrected or excluded. - **Demand profiling** – base demands were generated, then a demand analysis was conducted for the calibration day to derive the demand profiles. - **Operational controls** – controls were applied to the models using the information collected in earlier phases. - **Simulation and tolerances** – simulations were run for the calibration day. Models were calibrated to meet flow (±5%), pressure (±1m) and level (±100mm) tolerances, with any exceptions documented for further resolution. The final calibrated model was submitted to Yorkshire Water, along with a comprehensive model report, for review and formal sign-off.  ## **Outcome and Impact** The project delivered high-quality,[calibrated hydraulic models](https://www.crowderconsult.com/hydraulic-modelling-of-water-networks) that gave Yorkshire Water a reliable tool for network analysis and decision-making. The systematic approach to data gathering, validation, and field calibration ensured model robustness and accuracy. ### **Long-Term Benefits for Yorkshire Water** The models are now integrated within Netbase HM Manager. Yorkshire Water can efficiently maintain them and update them by targeting specific areas for localised field testing. This ongoing capability enhances operational efficiency. It also helps ensure the models remain calibrated and fit for purpose across the water network.
